Get an inside look. VMI develops leaders - leaders for industry, leaders for government, leaders for the military, and leaders for communities.
VMI's Open Houses are currently scheduled to be a two-day program that both students and parent(s)/guardian(s) participate in with an overnight portion that allows students to spend time in Barracks with hosts from the Corps of Cadets.
*NOTE: The overnight portion and overall itinerary for each Open House are subject to change (should unforeseen circumstances occur). In the event this happens, all registrants for that particular Open House will be notified as much in advance as possible. Please be sure all contact information submitted through the registration form is correct.
Questions & Answers
The registration process will begin at 8:00 a.m. in Lejeune Hall. The opening session begins at 9:45 a.m. in Marshall Hall.
We encourage all attendees to wear business casual attire or have a neat appearance. Most importantly, check the weather and dress appropriately. Comfortable shoes are also encouraged, as you will be touring post and walking to academic buildings.
The attending student is invited to bring up to 2 guests. Only the attending student is allowed in Barracks.
Sleeping bag, pillow, change of clothes, and toiletries. Your basic necessity items for an overnight stay. Pack light! There is no physical activity planned for the students attending.
The VMI Open House is designed to be informational for both students and their parent(s)/guardian(s). It's beneficial for parents/guardians to participate in both day 1 and day 2 events. Sample Itinerary
Parents/guardians and guests will need to find their own accommodations for the night. There are several options. Lodging and other local restaurants and activities can be found at lexingtonvirginia.com.
If you would like to request a room with a specific cadet during your Open House stay, you may send that quest via email to openhouse@vmi.edu. We will make every effort to pair you with the requested host.
We love your enthusiasm, but the VMI Open House programs are created for high school juniors, seniors, and college transfer students. We look forward to welcoming you next year!
You should have received a confirmation email (student's email) upon submitting your registration form. A check-in email will be sent to all registrants one week prior to the event once the roster is complete. Please review this sample itinerary for overall program details. If there are any changes to an Open House itinerary, all registrants will be informed.
Yes, there will be time built into the schedule, please request an interview online prior to the event.
The itinerary is set with parents in mind. On the first day, you will spend most sessions together, apart from the ROTC presentation, until after the parade. On the second day, you meet back up with your parent/guardian after breakfast until the program ends (around 10:00 a.m.).
The event is planned with parent/guardian attendance in mind; however, students are more than welcome to attend on their own. A parent or guardian's contact information is needed when registering for an Open House program.
Life happens, and we understand. To assist us in preparation for this event, please notify VMI as soon as possible that you wish to cancel your registration. Call 540-464-7211 or email openhouse@vmi.edu as soon as you know you are unable to attend.
